Overview: Présentation de l'ouvragePar Jacques Le GoffLes Rois thaumaturges sont le premier grand livre de Marc Bloch. Il paraît en 1924 quand Marc Bloch avait trente-huit ans. Il avait en 1920 publié, bénéficiant des mesures spéciales accordées aux combattants de la Grande Guerre, une version raccourcie d'une thèse de doctorat : Rois et serfs. Quoique annonçant ses futures études sur la royauté, le monde rural et la société féodale et utilisant de nouvelles méthodes d'exploitation des documents, cet ouvrage se situe dans la tradition de l'histoire économique sociale et politique et dans celle de l'histoire médiévale en France et en Europe occidentale.Les Rois thaumaturges sont le fruit d'un intérêt pour des thèmes très nouveaux dans l'historiographie européenne. C'est un livre révolutionnaire.Son sous-titre : Étude sur le caractère surnaturel attribué à la puissance royale particulièrement en France et en Angleterre dit bien l'objet du livre, c'est une recherche sur la croyance, sur des réalités qu'il appelle mentalités. Cette croyance est celle des hommes et des femmes du Moyen Âge en un pouvoir miraculeusement guérisseur qu'auraient eu les rois de France et d'Angleterre, celui de guérir en les touchant de la main les malades souffrant de ganglions, lésions, rougeurs appelées écrouelles. Les médecins modernes ont identifié cette maladie comme étant le scrofule c'est à dire l'adénite tuberculeuse. Qu'il s'agisse bien d'elle ou d'affections prêtant des symptômes voisins, elle semble avoir été répandue au Moyen Âge.La première nouveauté de ce livre est de s'intéresser à une affection corporelle. Marc Bloch parlera plus tard des " aventure du corps " et il a été un pionnier de l'histoire du corps, qui est devenues un important objet d'étude de la part des historiens et qui reste aujourd'hui un chantier très fécond. Marc Bloch avait été poussé aussi vers ce sujet par la grande amitié qui le liait à son frère médecin, décédé avant la parution du livre.En même temps Marc Bloch avait consulté des travaux sur la médecine populaire, sur les " superstitions " médicales et avait été amené à lire des travaux ethnographiques, à rapprocher l'histoire de l'ethnographie, dialogue interdisciplinaire qui devait connaître après Marc Bloch un grand développement avec l'anthropologie historique. L'ouvrage qui l'influença le plus fut le célèbre Rameau d'or ou les origines modernes de la royauté de Frazer.Marc Bloch ouvrait ainsi brillamment la voie qui devait conduire à l'histoire des Mentalités. Il les présentait à travers deux réflexions : celle sur la croyance aux miracles, et celle sur la croyance en des guérisons qui, aux yeux d'un esprit rationnel moderne, ne pouvaient être considérées que comme " fausses ". Marc Bloch avait éclairé ses réflexions par une expérience personnelle récente : la circulation des " fausses nouvelles " pendant la guerre de 14-18. Enfin, dernier emprunt à l'ethnologie, Marc Bloch analysait le toucher royal des écrouelles comme un rite.Mais le plus neuf était le renouvellement de l'histoire politique. Les rois de France et d'Angleterre n'étaient plus seulement des rois guerriers, de grands seigneurs féodaux, des administrateurs de plus en plus puissants mais des rois sacrés et merveilleux, des sortes de sorciers. Et c'est de là que venait leur plus grand prestige. C'était annoncer le renouvellement de l'histoire par la considération du symbolique et du magique comme signe et instrument du pouvoir. C'était esquisser une histoire de l'imaginaire politique.Enfin Marc Bloch étudiait, dans la longue durée, la genèse de cette croyance du XIIe au XIIIe siècle jusqu'à son déclin et à sa mort en Angleterre dès le début du XVIIIe siècle avec la dynastie protestante hanovrienne. En France le rite se prolongea jusqu'à la Révolution et Charles X tenta une fois de la ressusciter en 1825. La raison de cette mort est qu'on avait cessé de croire au caractère sacré des rois.Les historiens universitaires en 1924 réservèrent un accueil mitigé au livre, vantant l'érudition du jeune Marc Bloch en qui ils reconnaissent un des leurs, mais ils regrettaient plus ou moins qu'il ait dépensé tant de qualité et de temps à un sujet bizarre qui n'était pas selon eux un " vrai " thème d'histoire. Marc Bloch, découragé par cette accueil mais aussi parce qu'il pensait que l'historien n'était pas encore suffisamment armé scientifiquement et intellectuellement pour bien traiter de tel sujet, a abandonné cette voie.Après 1945, Les Rois thaumaturges apparurent d'abord comme un livre mineur par rapport aux " grands " ouvrages : Les Caractères originaux de l'histoire rurale française et La société féodale.Les Rois thaumaturges furent pourtant réédités en 1961 et leur réputation grandit avec les nouvelles problématiques d'une histoire politique de plus en plus sociologique et anthropologique ; leur réputation fut sanctionnée par une seconde réédition couronnée d'un grand succès dans la prestigieuses " Bibliothèque des Hi...
